Thousands of people have come together to help a traditional Catholic mother of eight who lost her husband last week.
The woman, Niki Rogan, was driving with her husband Mike and their seven children on the way to the hospital for the birth of their eighth child. Another car hit a deer on the road, which crashed into the Rogans' vehicle, killing the husband.
Niki, a traditional Catholic and stay-at-home mom who homeschools her children, then had to give birth as her other seven children received emergency care. Niki and all the children, including newborn baby Blaise, are currently in stable condition. Blaise Killian Rogan was baptized into the Catholic Church on Sunday.
The financial toll, however, appeared staggering, as Mike's life insurance policy was minimal.
The tragic story spread quickly on social media sites, and a friend's online fundraiser began accumulating generous donations. As of Tuesday morning, $280,000 have been donated. According to the GoFundMe site, launched by friends Dominic and Cecilia Gruetzmacher, the money “will be used to buy a replacement vehicle, to pay for funeral and medical expenses, and to create a safety net for the future welfare of the family.” All donations will go directly to Niki.
“To say that this campaign has gone beyond our expectations is an understatement,” said the Gruetzmachers. “The kindness, compassion, and generosity of spirit which we have witnessed this weekend has truly inspired us all.”
A funeral will be held for Mike Rogan this Saturday. Mike was a corporal in the US Marine Corps elevated to sergeant while in the Reserves.
