Hundreds of thousands of pro-lifers again are taking to the streets of their nation's capital to continue protesting abortion. Abortion continues largely unabetted, however, which has many Catholics wondering why the pro-life movement has been so ineffectual in attacking the pro-death culture.
The March for Life is by far the longest-running protest ever to occur in this country. Rightly so, as abortion is the single greatest calamity to ever plague mankind. More than 3,000 innocent babies die this cruelest death each and every day.
No greater issue than the right of babies to live their natural lives has polarized citizens in this country. So hundreds of thousands of Americans every year take to the streets in Washington, D.C. to protest the horrific slaughter — a slaughter that has already consumed tens of millions of babies since this crime was legalized in 1973.
It doesn't seem to matter which party is in Congress. Before the midterm elections last November, both houses of Congress were controlled by the supposedly pro-life Republican Party and a Republican president sat in the Oval Office. Even having six seemingly Catholic justices on the bench of the Supreme Court changed nothing for the better.
Those who protest abortion need to see that anti-life movements such as abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage didn't start in 1973 with the Supreme Court ruling Roe v Wade. It was already well underway in 1968 with the rejection by Catholic laity and clerics alike of infallible Catholic teaching condemning so-called safe-sex acts between married couples, which was spelled out in Paul VI's encyclical Humanae Vitae.
Until we go back to 1968 and undo the revolt against natural law and Catholic teaching — a revolt that centered on accepting the evil of contraception — pro-lifers will never have the means to dismantle the pro-death culture engulfing this country. Pro-lifers need to pray for the complete restoration of a truly pro-life culture.
