SAN LUIS POTOSI, Mexico, June 17, 2015 (ChurchMilitant.com) - Just a few weeks ago, Mexican prelates joined forces with renowned Spanish exorcist José Antonio Fortea, author of the book El Exorcismo Magno, to exorcise the predominantly Catholic nation of its demons.

On May 20, in the city of San Luis Potosi, Cardinal Juan Sandoval Íñiguez, Archbishop Emeritus of Guadalajara, along with multiple exorcists, performed in secret the rite of Exorcismo Magno — the highest rite of exorcism, reserved for nations and dioceses. Father Fortea described the rite as being "useful in situations in which great violence has been unleashed in a country."

The exorcists expelled demons in twofold: demons perpetuating Mexico's drug war that has now claimed more than 100,000 Mexican lives, and the demons of abortion.

Mexico's drug problem almost goes without saying, with a steady rise in cartel violence since 2006 when former president Felipe Calderon began heavy crackdowns on the major cartels. Pope Francis has been well aware of the problem, appointing archbishop of Morelia to cardinal due to his condemnations of the violence in his home state of Michoacan. Francis also took some criticism when he recently warned his home country of Argentina to avoid "Mexicanization" of the country.

After abortion became legalized in Mexico City in 2007, alarms were raised among the clergy that it would spark a domino effect on Mexico's other states. Roughly 100,000 legal abortions have been performed in the nation's capital city since 2007, which contributed to Pope Benedict XVI's decision to skip the city altogether during his visit in 2012.

During a public exorcism performed by Pope Francis himself on a Mexican parishioner claiming to be possessed by four demons of abortion, Catholic journalist Roberto O'Farrill reported the demons shouted, "You are all stupid because she (the Virgin Mary) ran us out of Mexico, and now you with your stupid laws have allowed sacrifice, human sacrifice, to return to Mexico. We don't want to say this, but she steps on our heads and forces us."
