PARRAMATTA, Australia (ChurchMilitant.com) - Thousands of Catholics have signed two petitions demanding the removal of Parramatta's Bp. Vincent Long Van Nguyen for imposing a radical sex education program on Catholic schools in the diocese.

Calling for accountability, the faithful are seeking the intervention of the Vatican's apostolic nuncio, Bp. Adolfo Tito Yllana, as the diocese touts its "bold new approach to Religious Education" — indoctrinating children with atheism, gender fluidity, queer studies, identity politics and indigenous spirituality.

According to Sydney's The Daily Telegraph, "instead of being taught to know God in their religion classes, or even how to pray or live their faith, Parramatta's Catholic students will be taught 'to recognize sexuality as an exploration in forming personal identity.'"

"For some inexplicable reason, Catholic schools in Parramatta have chosen to go down the woke path to oblivion, with a new religious studies curriculum that is just a Trojan horse to smuggle in a leftist political agenda," the newspaper commented Wednesday.

Critic: 'Sociology Mumbo Jumbo'

Sex historian Dr. Lisa Nolland, who has been leading a campaign against the promotion of "polymorphous perversity" in the compulsory Relationship and Sex Education program in British schools, told Church Militant that Parramatta's program was "cut from the same ideological cloth" as the British program.

She explained:

Remember Sigmund Freud, father of psychoanalysis? He designed the scaffolding for the sexualization of children by labeling them "polymorphously perverse." Sexologist Alfred Kinsey took this further, claiming that even infants have the "capacity" for orgasm. Hence, sexual satisfaction is a childhood goal to be pursued. Kinsey's theory of early childhood sexual development became the standard for sex education in schools. Kinsey also claimed that 10–47% of Americans are gay or bisexual, thus paving the way for homosexualizing of sex education.

The campaigner warned the bishop to heed Jesus' words not "to put a stumbling block before one of these little ones" for "it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea."

Meanwhile, traditionalist priest Fr. John Rizzo, who blasted the bishop's endorsement of the pro-gay syllabus, has been summoned by Bp. Long for a meeting, sources told Church Militant.

"As a Catholic priest in the Diocese of Parramatta, I kindly remind the Catholic Education Office of Parramatta of their crucial responsibility in teaching their students of the importance of the Ten Commandments [and] the Catholic teachings of morality," Rizzo wrote.

"Catholic faithful are sick and tired of politically correct agendas being thrown at the innocence of their children," he said.

Parramatta's media slammed the curriculum as "dumbed-down, sex-obsessed, sociology mumbo jumbo disguised in the language of the Church" that "advances an identity politics agenda, which is poisonous to faith and reason, for the sole purpose of pandering to the Zeitgeist."

Program Defended

Defending the new "exciting and evolving project," the diocese argued that the syllabus is "based on contemporary research" and said "Pope Francis recently affirmed this method when he advised leaders in the Church not to simply continue answering 'questions people are no longer asking.'"

The diocese claimed that "the approach to these sensitive matters will be firmly based in the traditions and teachings of the Catholic Church."

But it admitted "a very small section of our new curriculum involves 15- and 16-year-old adolescents (year 10 only) exploring the Catholic view on issues like sexuality and gender identity."

Bishop Long conceded that "the new curriculum is not just a one-way street. It's not just our teachers proclaiming tenets of the Christian faith and doctrines we believe in."

"Young people engage much better with the Christian faith much more meaningfully, personally and seriously when their questions, concerns and issues are taken up," he insisted.

In 2017, Long said that Australia's same-sex marriage referendum was an opportunity for Catholics "to listen to what the Spirit is saying through the signs of the times."

"It should not be a matter of a simple answer yes or no to the postal survey," the Vietnamese-born prelate wrote in his pastoral letter. "I am committed to make the church in Parramatta the house for all peoples, a church where there is less an experience of exclusion but more an encounter of radical love, inclusiveness and solidarity," he added.

Changes to the Church?

In 2018, Long suggested ordaining women as a means of transforming the "pedestalized" priesthood.

Long also organized an "LGBTIQ Symposium" in June 2018 for the diocese's chief educators, Catholic university staff, parish priests and theologians. The conference recommended the works of homosexualist Jesuit Fr. James Martin. A number of priests walked out during the talks.

Last week, Parramatta diocese invited liberal Episcopal priestess Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault to lead a presentation on "centering prayer."

Bourgeault writes on her blog: "When my daughter came home from school one day saying that a classmate had two mommies, my response was, 'Two mommies? How lucky is she?!'"

In a forward to the curriculum, Greg Whitby, director of Parramatta Catholic education, said that the diocese had "read 'the signs of the times' and responded with 'a bold new approach to religious education.'"

"There will be critics of this approach, just as the older generation critiques the younger generation, but we believe we can defend the proposition. Gender identity is a big issue," Whitby added.
