Now that Roe v. Wade may be on the chopping block, abortion pills are becoming more of a focus for both abortion supporters and pro-lifers. In tonight's In-Depth Report, Church Militant's Paul Murano evaluates this next battleground in the fight for life.
Young woman: "I felt the embryo come out. I was in the shower, and I just felt it slip out; and I was just like ... ."
The abortion industry is shifting the means by which it kills children. From 1973 until last year, surgical abortion was the norm for killing the innocent in America, destroying some 63 million preborn babies.
Dr. Brian Clowes, Ph.D., director of education and research, Human Life International: "The two primary weapons of the Culture of Death — murder and lies."
Recently, however, abortion pill deaths have outnumbered surgical abortions for the first time. COVID shutdowns and the instability of Roe have contributed to this shift, although the number of chemical abortions has been rising for decades.
Mary Szoch, director of the Center for Human Dignity, Family Research Council: "[In] 2016, Planned Parenthood increased the number of chemical abortions they did to 43%. ... Today that number is likely much higher."
Last year, Biden's Food and Drug Administration eliminated the requirement that these pills be dispensed in person through a physician, thus legally privatizing the act of killing babies.
Tessa Longbons, senior research associate, Charlotte Lozier Institute: "Women are receiving the abortion pill through the mail, and this is a drug that has four times the complications as surgical abortion."
Because of its danger, Longbons adds: "Chemical abortion really is the new back-alley abortion."
The abortion pill, however, kills only a small fraction of the preborn children killed chemically in this country.
Dr. Marie Anderson, chief medical officer, Tepeyac Family Center: "The pill kills babies with its abortifacient effects."
Along with contraceptive methods like the IUD, Norplant and Depo Provera, common birth control pills kill countless preborn children each year.
Dr. Marie Anderson: "When ovulation does occur, then the contraceptive action of the pill is provided by the other two mechanisms, one of which is an abortifacient."
Women on the pill could be having several abortions a year without ever knowing it.
Dr. Marie Anderson: "We can't know which mechanism is operative in any given cycle. And not knowing is deadly."
Dr. Bogomir Kuhar estimated between 7–12 million preborn children are killed in the U.S. annually by abortifacients. Dr. Brian Clowes of Human Life International calculates almost 1 billion preborn Americans have been killed by these silent abortions since 1965.
Dr. Brian Clowes: "When the Supreme Court legalized contraception."
If Roe is overturned, legislatures across the country will have to confront the pills that cause chemical abortions. No matter how unpopular it may be, this is the next important battleground.
Pro-life advocates note that since the abortion pill can kill children only up to 10 weeks' gestation, do-it-yourself abortions without a doctor's visit can also be very dangerous for the mother.
