ATLANTA (ChurchMilitant.com) - Tom Perez, a Catholic, and Keith Ellison, a fallen-away Catholic, are the new heads of the Democratic Party.

Perez was elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) on February 25, defeating Ellison, the expected winner, by a 235–200 vote. After Perez was voted in, however, he immediately named Ellison deputy chair.

Perez's family comes from the Dominican Republic. He attended Canisius High School, a Jesuit school in Buffalo, New York. He maintains that he is still Catholic, telling the Washington Post, "In order to get to heaven, you have to have letters of reference from poor people." He currently resides in the archdiocese of Washington under Cdl. Donald Wuerl, who made clear in 2009 that he would not refuse Holy Communion to Catholic politicians who openly defied Church teaching, saying the Church doesn't use Holy Communion "as a weapon."

In 2007, Perez became secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, and in 2009 was appointed assistant attorney general (AG) for the Civil Rights Division of the U. S. Department of Justice.

While assistant AG, he bragged about prosecuting pro-lifers under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE). He also authored a report on human trafficking but ignored the part Planned Parenthood has played in it.

Perez also has ties to billionaire George Soros. Before Perez ran for public office, he headed a Latino advocacy group, CASA de Maryland, which received funding from Soros' Open Societies Foundation and the Communist Hugo Chavez, then-president of Venezuela.

He was Obama's secretary of labor from 2013–2017, having been called "one of the [Obama] administration's most stalwart progressives." House Speaker Mitch McConnell noted Perez is "a committed ideologue who appears willing, quite frankly, to say or do anything to achieve his ideological end."

After announcement of Perez's election to head the DNC, WikiLeaks published a tweet exposing his role in helping to rig the DNC presidential primaries against Bernie Sanders.

Keith Ellison, although not practicing, was brought up Catholic in the archdiocese of Detroit, Michigan, having attended the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy. He went on to reject the Catholic faith after graduation to embrace Islam.

Ellison's support of the standard DNC platform — legalized abortion at any time for any reason; LGBT activism; and his desire to repeal the Second Amendment — made him a star in the DNC, with many expecting that the chairmanship would be his.

While Ellison first supported Bernie Sanders for the 2016 presidential race, he went on to support Hillary Clinton instead.
