TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (ChurchMilitant.com) - A Catholic governor is waging war on a woke university that peddles gender ideology.

On Friday, the Catholic governor of Florida, Republican Ron DeSantis, appointed six members to New College of Florida's board of trustees. This is the first step in DeSantis' plan to correct the college's educational direction during his second term.

During his inaugural address on Tuesday, DeSantis announced, "We must ensure school systems are responsive to parents and to students, not partisan interest groups, and we must ensure that our institutions of higher learning are focused on academic excellence and the pursuit of truth, not the imposition of trendy ideology."

New College of Florida currently touts a "just, diverse, equitable and inclusive community." Diversity, equity and inclusion is another iteration of Marxist critical race theory metastasizing in America's educational system. The Florida college currently boasts of its "Office of Outreach and Inclusive Excellence," its "Gender and Diversity Center" and a gender studies program. The college's gender studies program offers so-called queer studies, queer history and feminist philosophy, and it lists community relations and organizing as possible career outcomes.

A press secretary for Gov. DeSantis noted, "Starting today, the ship is turning around. New College of Florida, under the governor's new appointees, will be refocused on its founding mission of providing a world-class quality education with an exceptional focus on the classics."

DeSantis' chief of staff, James Uthmeier, reiterated the governor's plan for the woke school: "It is our hope that New College of Florida will become Florida's classical college, more along the lines of a Hillsdale of the South."

This comes after DeSantis waged war on woke ideology during his first term as governor. During COVID-19, the Catholic governor resisted governmental overreach and tyrannical lockdown mandates and protected small businesses, children and the elderly from the dangerous pandemic policies that were applied in many other states.

DeSantis has also taken measures to protect schoolchildren from critical race theory and explicit sexual content in classrooms. After facing backlash from the woke mob, DeSantis then took Disney to task, blasting the entertainment giant for grooming children with transsexual ideology.

One of the governor's new appointees to the New College of Florida's board of trustees is Christopher Rufo, a senior fellow with the conservative think tank Manhattan Institute. Rufo gave a warning to woke so-called educators: "Gov. DeSantis is going to lay siege to university 'diversity, equity, and inclusion' programs."

While leftists panic at the possibility of losing their stranglehold on American education, DeSantis' recent success in the midterm elections reiterates the fact that Floridians approve of the work he is accomplishing.
