DETROIT (ChurchMilitant.com) - A Google insider who anonymously leaked internal documents has now gone public.

The former Google software engineer, Zachary Vorhies, previously leaked internal documents to investigative group Project Veritas that showed a lack of fairness in some of Google's algorithms.

Revealing his identity for the first time, Vorhies told Project Veritas in an interview video published Wednesday:

I gave the documents to Project Veritas, I had been collecting the documents for over a year. And the reason why I collected these documents was because I saw something dark and nefarious going on with the company and I realized that they were going to not only tamper with the elections, but use that tampering with the elections to essentially overthrow the United States.

"I've been living with this burden for three years," he said, "since 2016 when they started changing everything."

Vorhies, who worked at Google for eight years, described his leaking as "an act of atonement, to make my conscience clear."

Back in June, Project Veritas released a report on Google's apparent efforts to influence public opinion by altering search algorithms. Vorhies was the anonymous insider who leaked that information to Project Veritas.

That June 24 report included undercover footage of a Google executive referencing how the tech giant is necessary for "preventing the next Trump situation."

After leaking anonymously, Vorhies claims, he received a letter from Google in which the company said it knew what he had done. The letter included six demands, ranging from "cease and desist" to handing over his personal data.

Vorhies also says that police came to his home in San Francisco to perform a "wellness check." San Francisco police confirmed to Project Veritas that they responded to a "mental health call" on Vorhies.

I saw something dark and nefarious going on with the company.

In the interview, James O'Keefe asks Vorhies for his opinion on how Congress considers Google a "platform" that is "not interested in meddling in content."

"Google is playing both sides of the game," Vorhies replies, adding:

On one hand, they're saying that they are a platform, and that they are immune to being sued for the content that they host on their websites. On the other hand, they're acting as a publisher, in which they're determining the editorial agenda of these certain companies and they're applying that.

Vorhies opines that a lot Google employees "probably feel guilty like I did."

When asked what compelled him to leak documents and come forward publicly, Vorhies dismissed the idea that he is being "brave," arguing, "The feeling that I participated in what they were doing was actually worse."

He says later on, "And if I didn't do this, then I'd have to live with myself the rest of my life. And people aren't going to understand what I'm talking about until they see the documents, because it's really that bad."

Vorhies mentions that many people in his inner circle told him to go to Project Veritas for leaking because it had more "integrity" than mainstream news organizations.

Catholics and pro-lifers have raised concerns about Google policies in the past — such as in May 2018 when Google refused to accept any ads related to the Irish abortion referendum.

During a summit at the White House in July, Lila Rose of pro-life group Live Action claimed that Live Action's videos are some of the most-viewed "abortion-related content on YouTube," but YouTube had "buried" these videos in the search results. Google owns YouTube, having purchased the video-sharing site for $1.65 billion in 2006.
