HAMDEN, Conn. (ChurchMilitant.com) - Iowa voters trust Bernie Sanders more than Hillary Clinton.
The race for the Democratic presidential nomination is coming down to character in the Iowa Democratic Caucus scheduled for February 1.
A Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday shows that Sen. Bernie Sanders has pulled ahead of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — and it's not due to policy.
Sanders, who was trailing Clinton in December polls by 11 points, now leads Clinton by five: a 16-point swing.
Poll results and experts agree that Sanders' surge is attributed more to character than to differences in policy. Peter A. Brown, assistant director of Quinnipiac University, which conducted the poll, commented, "The Democratic race is different than the GOP contest because it lacks a divisive tone. Iowa Democrats like both major candidates personally; they just like Sen. Sanders more."
Voters find small differences in policy between the two pro-abortion politicians. But results show that voters trust Sanders more than Clinton. Voters also feels Sanders shares their values and concerns more than Clinton.
Clinton has made bold statements about changing the religious beliefs of people, as she does around eight and half minutes into her speech last year (see video below).
Speaking of Iowa voters, Brown remarked, "Senator Sanders' surge seems based on the perception by Iowa Democrats that he is a better fit for Iowans. They see him by solid double digit margins as more sharing their values, more honest and trustworthy and viewed more favorably overall than is Secretary Clinton."
Ryan Struyk of ABC News reports, "Roughly a quarter of Iowa Democrats think Clinton is not honest and trustworthy, doesn't care about their problems and does not share their values."
Trust issues are plaguing Hillary Rodham Clinton owing to the many scandals in her carreer dating all the way back to her days as a lawyer in Arkansas.
But last year she was caught lying during the investigation into the Benghazi scandal. And now a judge has found discrepancies in her sworn testimony concerning her alleged surrendering of emails as ordered by the court.
