MEDAN, Indonesia ( - A Catholic priest offering Mass in Indonesia Sunday was attacked with an axe by an ISIS "soldier," who also tried to blow up hundreds of Catholic parishioners, but failed.

Father Albert Pandiangan, 60, was in the middle of offering Mass in a parish in Medan when he was rushed by a man who slashed him on his left arm. The attacker's backpack bomb failed to go off, only injuring the attacker.

The 18-year-old fanatic, who had a self-drawn ISIS flag in his wallet, was wrestled down to the ground by the congregation following the "popping" sound made by the failed explosive. They removed the axe from the Islamist's hands and waited for police.

The terrorist claimed to authorities he was not working alone.

This attack on a Catholic priest follows another assault that happened in early August when Fr. Jacques Hamel was martyred offering Mass.

The terrorists were shot dead by the police after killing the priest and taking several people, including two nuns, hostage for over 40 minutes. A third nun escaped and alerted the police, who took action and shot the Islamic terrorists as they left the church screaming "Daesh," another name for ISIS.

Archbishop Dominique Lebrun said in a homily afterwards that Fr. Hamel's last words to the Islamic terrorists were defiant.

"Isn't that what you wanted to say, Jacques, with your last words, when you fell to the ground?" Abp. Lebrun asked. "After you were struck by the knife, you tried to push away your assailants with your feet and said, 'Go away, Satan.' You repeated it, 'Go away, Satan.'"

In 2014, ISIS propaganda magazine Dabiq released an issue showing the famous St. Peter's Square obelisk with the ISIS flag on top. The magazine claimed that one day Islamic Sharia law will conquer Rome.

"We will conquer your Rome, break your crosses, and enslave your women, by the permission of Allah, the Exalted," ISIS spokesman Mohammed Al-Adnani said. "If we do not reach that time, then our children and grandchildren will reach it, and they will sell your sons as slaves at the slave market."

Following the attack on Fr. Hamel, Pope Francis spoke out about the Islamic religion, saying that it is "not right to identify Islam with violence." The Islamic State responded in their magazine to the Holy Father, rejecting his statement.

"The fact is, even if you were to stop bombing us, imprisoning us, torturing us, vilifying us, and usurping our lands, we would continue to hate you because our primary reason for hating you will not cease to exist until you embrace Islam."

It continued, "Even if you were to pay jizyah [tax for infidels] and live under the authority of Islam in humiliation, we would continue to hate you."
