KALAMAZOO, Mich. (ChurchMilitant.com) - The Biden-Harris campaign is raising eyebrows over its endorsement of a Michigan state representative who, in a series of blog posts, referred to women as "breeders," referenced drug use and joked about 4-year-olds wearing thongs.
Democratic state representative Jon Hoadley of Kalamazoo, who is seeking his party's nomination in Michigan's 6th Congressional District, ran a LiveJournal blog he called "Rambling Politics" before being elected to state government in 2014. It is now coming back to haunt him.
In 2005, Hoadley, a practicing homosexual, discussed jaunts to gay bars to "learn about crystal meth," various sexual conquests and young children in thongs. He used the heterophobic term "breeders" to describe women.
In an attempt at damage control, a Hoadley spokeswoman publicly explained the controversy is all a misunderstanding and that it is being used as political ammunition by Hoadley's opponent, incumbent Republican Congressman Fred Upton.
"Because of 150,000 deaths from COVID and a collapsing economy, Congressman Fred Upton's chances of getting reelected are drowning so quickly that the Republicans have mistaken bad college poetry for a life preserver," she said in a statement.
Hoadley himself responded by denying all allegations of drug use or sex crimes, calling them "unequivocally not true," and is calling out Upton for not putting an end to the "swamp politics."
But Hoadley did offer an apology for his blog posts: "I said things 16 years ago that I would never say today and aren't reflective of who I am. For folks I hurt with my words, I'm sorry."
He explained the blog post was written after he attended a public health meeting addressing crystal meth use among the so-called LGBTQ population. He called the meeting a "Nancy Reagan-style don't do drugs meeting." Hoadley explained that the "post literally ended with don't do crystal meth. And they make it sound like I'm doing drugs," he maintained.
In addition to Biden, Hoadley has been endorsed by vice-presidential hopeful Sen. Kamala Harris and Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer. Last week, he was also endorsed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee — the official campaign arm of the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives.
He is also backed by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), a grassroots organization that promotes liberal causes. He also has the support of Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey of Massachusetts and "Squad" members Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar, among others.
On Thursday, Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox called for Hoadley's removal as Vice-Chair of the state House Appropriations Committee:
Jon Hoadley's blog posts are incredibly disturbing. A person who holds women, children and the laws of Michigan in such contempt should have no place in deciding how the state of Michigan spends its money. Jon Hoadley might think it's funny to blog about assault, but as a former Chairman of the House Apportions committee and an author of abuse legislation, I cannot stand back and watch the people of our state become his next "victims." I call on Representative Hoadley to be removed from his post as a committee Vice Chairman immediately.
National Republican Congressional Committee press secretary Michael McAdams released a statement after the August primary, also referencing Hoadley's blog.
"There is no place in Congress for the deranged musings of down-on-his-luck pedo-sex-poet Jon Hoadley," McAdams said.
Hoadley was raised in South Dakota and was studying at Michigan State University at the time of his LiveJournal blog posts. The blog was taken down last week.
Hoadley describes himself as a progressive Democrat. He was first elected to the state House in 2014 and was reelected in 2016 and 2018.
He currently serves as minority vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee and is also a member of the National LGBTQ Task Force, National Caucus of Environmental Legislators and the American State Legislators for Gun Violence Prevention.
Hoadley is a supporter of Medicare for All and the Green New Deal — two national progressive initiatives.
Hoadley expressed concern that the political discussion will feed into the stereotype that so-called LGBT people are perverts. "It's every LGBTQ kid that is worried about if someone is going to say the same terrible things about them," he propounded.
The Catholic Church teaches homosexual behavior is perverted activity, redirecting the natural meaning and purpose of human sexuality. As is explained in paragraph 2357 of the universal Catechism, human nature and God's law attest that homosexual acts are "intrinsically disordered" and "under no circumstances can they be approved."
The 6th Congressional District covers much of Southwest Michigan, including the counties of Kalamazoo, Van Buren, Cass, St. Joseph, Berrien and Allegan.
