During the last Marian apparition at Fatima on October 13, 1917, some 70,000 people witnessed what seemed to be the sun crashing to earth. Photographs were even taken showing the crowd looking up at the sky in wonder and fear. The event that day came to be called the "Miracle of the Sun."
As there were three secrets or messages at Fatima, similarly, there were also three messages given at the Church-approved Marian apparition to a nun in Akita, Japan, in 1973. The third and final message from Our Lady of Akita to Sr. Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa was given on the same day as Fatima's Miracle of the Sun: October 13. In that message Mary warned:
As I told you, if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never have seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by my Son.
