WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com) - An incumbent, pro-abortion senator from Michigan is only showing a slight lead over the pro-life challenger.
A Detroit Free Press poll published on Friday shows Democratic U.S. senator Gary Peters with a slim four-point lead over Republican contender John E. James.
Around this time in 2014, a Free Press poll showed Peters with a nine-point lead over Republican Terry Lynn Land.
The incumbent's current position has kept him from "races related as safe for the incumbent party" on 270ToWin.com, a website that lets users adjust variables for forecasting elections.
"This week marks the 45th anniversary of #RoevWade. I am 100% #ProLife because I believe life begins at conception and ends at a natural death," said John James in a 2018 tweet. "We will not stop fighting until we end abortion, for it is our sacred duty to protect the most vulnerable among us; the unborn."
James' commitment to protecting the life of every human being earned him an endorsement from The Right to Life of Michigan Political Action Committee (RLM-PAC) in this current race.
"John James is a wonderful man who will protect unborn children. He has cleared the field. He ran a strong 2018 campaign against Sen. Debbie Stabenow. It was unfortunate that he had to use resources on a primary challenge from a candidate who wasn't 100% pro-life," said RLM-PAC chairman Paul Miller.
"Having a pro-life Senate is vital, and it may come down to John James. After the Kavanaugh nomination, it should be clear that a Senate with a pro-abortion majority will not just block nominees who don't agree with them, but personally destroy them," he added.
NARAL Pro-Choice America (NARAL), an abortionist lobbying group, reacted negatively to the endorsement. "Not surprising: An extreme anti-choice organization is backing both Trump and @GaryPeters's right-wing challenger, John James. James is so extreme on opposing reproductive freedom for Michigan women that he's earned this group's [RLM-PAC's] early endorsement," NARAL posted in a tweet.
While opposing James, NARAL gave Gary Peters an abortion-rights voting score of 100% in 2019, and the group has officially endorsed the pro-abortion senator for re-election.
"Right now, we need champions like Sen. Gary Peters fighting for reproductive freedom in the Senate," said NARAL's national political director at an event in June. "As extreme anti-choice Republicans like John James and Donald Trump continue to launch attack after attack on women and families, it's critical to have strong advocates who will stand up for our fundamental freedoms in the face of these unprecedented threats."
"Senator Peters has always had our back in the fight for reproductive freedom, and we're proud to endorse him for re-election," added the NARAL director.
"I am honored to receive NARAL's endorsement," Peters said in response. "At a time when women's health care and reproductive freedoms are under attack in Michigan and around the country, it is more important than ever to have leaders who will fight to defend them."
"A woman has a fundamental right to make her own decisions about her own health care, and politicians have no business getting in the way of that," he added.
The nation's largest abortion chain has also endorsed Peters. Thanking Planned Parenthood in a tweet, Peters wrote, "Proud to be endorsed by Planned Parenthood Action in this campaign. I remain deeply committed to defending women's access to affordable health care and will always stand up against attacks on reproductive rights."
Planned Parenthood praises Peters on its web page for the 2020 Michigan Election: "In Congress, Peters has worked to protect and expand access to health care — casting a crucial vote to pass the Affordable Care Act in the House and holding the line against efforts to repeal the landmark law in the Senate."
Peters' campaign has attacked James for his opposition to the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), which covers contraceptives — some of which prevent the implantation of an embryo, like the so-called Plan-B drug.
James' campaign recently responded to those attacks.
Abby Walls, James' communications director, said "Gary Peters doesn't want voters to know that he is on an exclusive gold-plated, taxpayer-funded health care plan which less than 300 people in Michigan qualify for."
"Like a typical career politician, Gary Peters made laws about health care that raise everyone else's rates and restrict everyone else's choice of health care options," she continued, "but Peters' plan does not have the same restrictions. It's more "Do as I say, not as I do" conduct from 30-year career politician Gary Peters."
