JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (ChurchMilitant.com) - Missouri's new pro-life governor is proposing money be set aside in the state's budget to provide abortion alternatives for pregnant mothers.

Governor Eric Greitens, who assumed office in January, allocated more than $6 million in his February 2 budget proposal to fund Missouri's "Alternatives to Abortion Program."

Goals of the program include:

  • Reducing abortions

  • Fostering healthy babies

  • Promoting responsible and self-sufficient parenting

The program provides a wide range of services for expectant mothers such as:

  • Prenatal and medical care

  • Parenting skills and adoption assistance

  • Infant and child care

  • Job training and placement services

  • Drug testing and educational services

  • Parental supplies and housing assistance

The republican governor, a former navy seal, is unabashedly pro-life. As last year's GOP gubernatorial candidate Greitens declared, "I'll tell you how I approach this. I am pro-life. I believe that we need to protect every life and that we need to defend the lives of the unborn. For me, this isn't just something I talk about, this is work that I have actually done."

I believe that we need to protect every life and that we need to defend the lives of the unborn.

Greitens — who made Fortune Magazine's 2014 list of "Worlds 50 Greatest Leaders" — goes on to explain, "I've worked in Bolivia with children of the street. I've worked in one of Mother Teresa's homes for the destitute and dying." He adds, "And I've seen the amazing power that comes when we have leaders who are willing to bring people together and make it clear that every life matters."

Missouri's governor is wasting no time in putting his pro-life words into practice. His recent budget proposal will triple spending in 2018 for the "Alternatives to Abortion Program" over it's 2016 costs of roughly $2 million.

The program, established in 2007, was designed "to assist low income pregnant women in carrying their unborn child to term instead of having an abortion, and to assist them in caring for their child or placing their child for adoption."

Governor Greitens summed up his pro-life policy as a commitment to helping women.

As a pro-life leader, I think it's essential that we help every woman who finds herself in a difficult situation - that she knows that she's loved, that she's supported, that she's got a community of people around her that support her in a difficult time. And that's the kind of pro-life leadership that I'm going to bring to the state of Missouri.

The governor's budget also includes an increase of $750,000 in additional funding to aid victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
