CARMEL, Ind. (ChurchMilitant.com) - A group of Indiana Catholics has launched a website to help support their embattled priest, who was thrown under the bus by his bishop after he condemned a Marxist front group.
Carmel-based Catholics for Unity and Peace (CUP) recently created an official webpage for their organization, which in addition to backing Fr. Theodore Rothrock, includes broader objectives like defending Catholics' right to defend their beliefs.
CUP came together after Lafayette bishop Timothy Doherty suspended Fr. Rothrock July 1 when the group called "Carmel Against Racial Injustice" (CARI) demanded the pastor be removed for speaking against Black Lives Matter Foundation Inc., an organization utterly opposed to Church teaching.
Father Rothrock still awaits Bp. Doherty's decision regarding the future of his priesthood in the Lafayette diocese. Now, in addition to short-term support for Fr. Rothrock, their broadened purpose is to "defend our Catholic beliefs and our rights to express those beliefs," "provide education about movements/organizations that infringe on our beliefs" and "work to help the institutional Church to provide this leadership."
CUP seeks to "provide a voice to the laity in these troubled times" and "promote truth to ignite critical thinking."
"The support we've received about Fr. Rothrock from faithful Catholics is overwhelming," Christine Harrington of Eternal Life Plan and a member of CUP told Church Militant.
"In one hour we received over 40 subscribers to our new website and it just keeps growing every day from all over the world," she continued. "The Faithful are hungry for authentic Catholicism and want to fight for priests that are being unfairly silenced."
The case of Fr. Rothrock is causing other believers to come forward, recognizing his case is representative of many good priests silenced for speaking truth.
"There is a rising up of faithful Catholics who will no longer be silent against the modernist," said Harrington. "I've received numerous calls and emails and this is what faithful Catholics are telling me."
According to the website, "CUP is open to Catholics who embrace our beliefs by accepting the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals and are in good standing with the Catholic Church."
CUP believes every human being must be defended since "each of us is made in the image and likeness of God," "gender is tied to biological sex, and so tied to the spiritual reality of a person" and "democracy that accepts and embraces God's existence and love of His creation, rather than Marxism or socialism, because both reject God's existence and is centered on a materialist worldview that divides people, limits religious freedom which leads to a culture of death."
