WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com) - A new speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives has been elected following 22 days of turmoil.
Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., was elected House speaker on Wednesday after the GOP failed for over three weeks to rally enough support behind several of its members previously vying for the position.
The Louisiana Rep. posted on X after the House election:
It has been an arduous few weeks, and a reminder that the House is as complicated and diverse as the people we represent. The urgency of this moment demands bold, decisive action to restore trust, advance our legislative priorities, and demonstrate good governance. Our House Republican Conference is united, and eager to work.
As Speaker, I will ensure the House delivers results and inspires change for the American people. We will restore trust in this body. We will advance a comprehensive conservative policy agenda, combat the harmful policies of the Biden Administration, and support our allies abroad. And we will restore sanity to a government desperately in need of it. Let's get back to work.
Johnson has been a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and a key congressional figure in looking into potential breaches of election integrity in the 2020 presidential election. He served as vice chair of the House GOP Conference. In 2023, Johnson became chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government.
Political commentator Benny Johnson posted about the new speaker:
WE HAVE A SPEAKER: Who is Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana?
-He's America First & MAGA
-Ally of the House Freedom Caucus
-His mentor is Jim Jordan
-He served as legal defense for Trump during both impeachment trials
-Voted against all Ukraine spending after the initial bill
-He has an F rating from 'Republicans for Ukraine'
-Objected to certifying 2020 election fraud
-Called to arrest Pelosi after she tore up the State of the Union
It's time for We the People to take back OUR HOUSE!
Last week, Church Militant interviewed fellow Republican Judiciary Committee members Lance Gooden, R-Texas, and Tom Tiffany, R-Wis. Both GOP representatives spoke about the horror of the crisis at the southern U.S. border and how nongovernmental organizations, aka NGOs — especially Catholic Charities USA — have played a major role in profiting from illegal immigration.
Gooden proclaimed, "American people from both sides of the aisle — if they really knew what was going on with this funding of this migrant crisis with our taxpayer dollars in the name of 'the Lord's work' — the American people would be outraged."
The congressman has demanded financial transparency from Catholic Charities but has yet to see any results.
When asked about holding organizations accountable for facilitating illegal immigration with taxpayer dollars, Rep. Gooden warned, "I think we are to the point where it's time to have subpoenas if Catholic Charities don't [sic] want to respond to my very reasonable letters asking for detailed accounting of where their funds are going — where their funds are coming from."
"I'd like to have a hearing," Gooden urged. "I want the American people to know how serious this problem is. It's not just an open-border problem. It's an open border paid for by the taxpayer, and that's got to stop."
Rep. Tiffany echoed Gooden's call for a hearing by the House Judiciary Committee in hopes of getting answers from NGOs about their so-called migrant services.
Rep. Johnson could help make the hypothetical hearings a reality, which would help further expose to the public the role the U.S. bishops' activist arm has in pushing illegal immigration in exchange for government money.
Johnson said today on the House floor after becoming speaker, "We have a catastrophe at our southern border. The status quo is unacceptable, and we must come together and address the broken border. We have to do it."
"The greatest threat to our national security is our nation's debt. This speaker's office is going to be known for decentralizing the power here," he added.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' involvement in President Biden's border crisis was one of four issues discussed at the Deposit of Faith Coalition's July 20 press conference in Washington, D.C.
Church Militant and the other coalition members are advocating for the defunding of the U.S. bishops, an effort in which the House Judiciary Committee could play a major role.
