DETROIT (ChurchMilitant.com) - An opinion piece published by Catholic World Report is refuting claims that Catholics who describe the Priestly Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) as schismatic are "narrow" and "legalistic."
Andrew Bartel, who at one time was a follower of the SSPX, wrote a lengthy rebuttal to statements made by Aux. Bp. Athanasius Schneider of Astana, Kazakhstan in a recent interview.
Schneider claimed the SSPX is "surely not schismatic" and that people who affirm the opposite have "a very narrow, legalistic view of the reality of the Church."
He added that the people who view the SSPX as schismatic are "putting the letter of the Canon Law above the importance, the primary importance of the fullness of the Catholic faith and of the traditional liturgy."
Bartel, however, makes six points asserting the SSPX is definitely in schism with the Catholic Church. To read them, read Answering Six Objections from the SSPX in Catholic World Report.
