Contrary to what is commonly believed, individuals can make all the difference, and one woman did; her actions saved humanity! Our Blessed Mother, in her "yes" to God, changed the history of humanity. And perhaps even more importantly, because of her "yes," the world received a redeemer in Jesus, and He restored God's creation. Just one woman did all this and then some!

Mary is the crowned Queen of Heaven

Moreover, Mary's pivotal role in humanity's redemption is far from over! As Queen of Heaven, she is tirelessly active in her role as Queen, interceding on behalf of all her sons and daughters in the Church.

Powerful Individuals Abound

If you review closely the story of humanity's redemption as recorded in Sacred Scripture, you see case after case of how normal men and women, by God's grace, responded positively to God's call and did His will to save themselves, but also their community.

Recall how:

  • Noah, by his obedience, saved humanity from total obliteration by building an Ark to save his family and many animals
  • Abraham, from the home of his forefathers, heeded God's call to start a new nation, raising up this nation through his descendants
  • The prophet Elijah brought Israel back to the right worship of the true God
  • Judas Maccabeus, in the aftermath of the Greeks' desecration of the temple, led a revolt to purify it and restore the right worship of God

Notice a common theme: These individuals acted in almost all cases alone, and in many cases singlehandedly! God, over history, has often used individuals over groups of people or councils to make known His will.

God, over history, has often used individuals over groups of people or councils to make known His will.

Just this past century, two great Christian writers, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, in their greatly loved and respected works of fiction, underscored in their books how individuals are important and that one man or woman can make all the difference. In Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, one little man, Frodo Baggins, saved Middle Earth from destruction and domination by the evil entity Sauron. In Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, the Pevensie children, through the course of the novels, save Narnia from various nefarious evil entities. The lone man, the lone child in Tolkien's and Lewis' fictional works were always depicted as instrumental for good or for bad in changing the world in which they lived under God's dominion.

This being said, it is imperative to note that no council of clerics can, through some sort of vote, decide something that is contradictory to revealed truth as recorded in the Sacred Scriptures — no matter what anyone in today's secular press thinks or writes these days. No group of men can change what God designed simply by sitting around a table and voting to say, "We think marriages now can be between a man and a man." No group of individuals, even those well-intentioned, can — by groupthink — redefine what is or is not God's revealed truth as recorded in our Sacred Scriptures.

Her Immaculate Heart Plays a Key Role

On June 12 this year, we celebrate the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On this feast day, we recall how it was Our Blessed Mother's selfless love and trust in the true God that gave the world a Redeemer in Jesus and how we should follow her holy example and trust in God.

Mary knew in her immaculate and holy heart that small acts requiring great faith — such as summoning the power of her Son — are essential to producing the miraculous.

Lamentably, Our Blessed Mother and her dynamic and ongoing role in humanity's redemption is disparaged in today's world, just like the role of the individual is put down by so many. Individuals do make a difference for good in this fallen world, and humanity was indeed redeemed singlehandedly by one holy woman who said unequivocally "yes" to God.

The gospel truth is that Mary's role as Queen of Heaven is an essential one, and that because of her ongoing and tireless intercession on behalf of her many sons and daughters, millions of souls are being saved! What a gift to humanity and reason to celebrate! Because of so many people disparaging Our Blessed Mother these days, many miss her essential and ongoing role in saving humanity from damnation.

Mary continues to be our intercessor with Christ

Mary's dynamic role as intercessor for the little ones is beautifully depicted in the wedding at Cana (John 2:1–12). This miracle of turning water into wine is rather peculiar. In the eyes of the world, Our Lord's saving a couple's wedding banquet from being a short affair and ending dry was no big deal. It's not like Mary asked Jesus to end world hunger; rather she directed him to solve the immediate little problem at hand, a wedding banquet which, through mismanagement or misjudgment, had gone south; "they have no more wine!" Mary, the good mother, knew in her immaculate and holy heart that small acts requiring great faith — such as summoning the power of her Son — are essential to producing the miraculous.

In a similar fashion, all these centuries later, devout sons and daughters of God do not hesitate to ask Our Blessed Mother to intercede on their behalf in the many little tragedies that play out in their day-to-day lives. They know that in Mary's eyes, these little things are not too small for her to bring to her Son's care and attention. And although in the eyes of the world — at least compared to world hunger and pandemics — these small concerns are nothing, in the eyes of the one to whom tragedy strikes, it is their world's end.

So, this year, celebrate God's gift of Our Blessed Mother to humanity and remember, through her "yes" the world was given its redemption in her Son Jesus! And remember joyfully that one woman continues to help save her world and ours through her connection to Christ.
