WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com) - Planned Parenthood is praising a television show for exalting abortion.

The latest episode of ABC television series "Scandal" featured a scene in which the lead character Olivia Pope, portrayed by Kerry Washington, undergoes an abortion set to the hymn "Silent Night."

Entitled "Baby It's Cold Outside," last Thursday's episode — the season five winter finale — showed Pope lying on a hospital bed as a female doctor performs the abortion. Along with background music of a choir singing the traditional Christmas carol, a voiceover of the character's father can be heard saying:

A pressure point, soft tissue, an illness, an antidote to greatness. You think you're better off with people who rely on you, depend on you, but you're wrong, because you will inevitably end up needing them, which makes you weak, pliable. Family doesn't complete you. It destroys you.

Much of the episode showcased character Melli Grant, a Republican senator, as she attempted to filibuster a bill to defund Planned Parenthood; Pope discovers that the filibuster was successful as she sits in the lobby of an abortion mill.

The season finale concluded with a scene showing Pope sipping from a glass of wine and enjoying the sight of her Christmas tree, all while the hymn "Ave Maria" can be heard.

Planned Parenthood soon released a statement commending the show, stating they "hope those in Congress — and throughout the nation — who are steadfast on rolling the clock back on reproductive health care access are taking note," adding that "rights to reproductive health care are under attack."

The scene has been met with outrage, with Newsbusters describing it as "a truly vile, stomach-churning scene" and Ben Shapiro of Breitbart calling the display "gross" and a "violation of the unspoken compact between entertainers and their audiences."

The episode aired a day after Senate Republicans announced that the vote on a bill defunding the abortion giant will take place after the holiday weekend.

"[The bill] will contain a defund of Planned Parenthood in the Obamacare repeal bill," announced Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) at a weekly press conference. "We'll be moving to that after Thanksgiving."

This isn't the first time "Scandal" has showcased abortion. An episode from season four, which aired earlier this year, featured a young woman in the military who became pregnant through rape and implores Olivia Pope to assist her in procuring an abortion; Pope is initially hesitant, as the baby could be used as evidence in proving the rape.

The show features a 30-second abortion scene, during which Pope holds the woman's hand as the abortionist performs the abortion via vacuum.
