Abortion is not 'essential'

WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com) - A U.S. official is publically excoriating the United Nations (U.N.) for pushing abortion disguised as pandemic relief aid.

John Barsa, head of the U.S. Agency for International Development, told U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres to stop peddling abortion as "essential" humanitarian relief in its COVID-19 response. Barsa chastised the U.N. in a public letter on Monday for earmarking abortion in its Global Humanitarian Response Plan (Global HRP).

"Therefore, the U.N. should not use this crisis as an opportunity to advance access to abortion as an 'essential service,'" wrote Barsa.

Stefano Gennarini, vice president for legal studies at Center for Family and Human Rights (C-Fam), told Church Militant that Barsa's public admonishment of the U.N. was without equal.

"No U.S. high official has ever publicly chastised the U.N. for promoting abortion in any specific instance," recalled Gennarini.

Barsa pinpointed that the U.N. was sneaking abortion into its humanitarian aid package specifically by masking it as so-called "health services."

"Unfortunately, the Global HRP does just this, by cynically placing the provision of "sexual and reproductive health services" on the same level of importance as food-insecurity, essential health care, malnutrition, shelter and sanitation," he observed.

Barsa got even more specific in exposing the U.N.'s implementation of abortion.

"Most egregious," declared Barsa, "is that the Global HRP calls for the widespread distribution of abortion-inducing drugs and abortion supplies, and for the promotion of abortion in local country settings."

Gennarini admired Barsa not only for his boldness but also for his overt directness in taking the U.N. to task for proliferating abortion.

"Here, John Barsa didn't just privately chastise the secretary-general for peddling abortion in the U.N.'s humanitarian policies in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, he did it publicly," Gennarini remarked.

"It's unprecedented," he added.

The letter comes at a key moment in U.N. negotiations.

In his coverage of U.N. affairs, Gennarini emphasized the timeliness of Barsa's letter.

"The letter comes at a key moment in U.N. negotiations over resolutions bearing on the COVID-19 pandemic," reported Gennarini. "The Economic and Social Council of the United Nations is negotiating an annual resolution on humanitarian work of the U.N. system, adding focused interventions on the pandemic."

He further explained, "The U.N. secretary-general is asking U.N.-member states to endorse his plan and fund it in the humanitarian resolution."

In his letter, Barsa recalled President Donald Trump's admonishment of the U.N. in September for pressuring countries to accept humanitarian aid that was tied to abortion:

Under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, the United States has made clear that we will "never tire of defending innocent life." President Trump said in his address to the 74th U.N. General Assembly that the U.N. simply has "no business attacking the sovereignty of nations that wish to protect innocent life."

During his September address, Trump outed the U.N. for inserting abortion into "many" of its humanitarian projects.

"We are aware that many United Nations projects have attempted to assert a global right to taxpayer-funded abortion on demand, right up until the moment of delivery," asserted Trump.

Trump then put "global bureaucrats" on notice that they can't foist abortion on nations like America.

Like many nations here today," observed Trump, "we in America believe that every child — born and unborn — is a sacred gift from God."

In his Monday letter, Barsa instructed the U.N. on just how it needs to remedy the issue.

"Therefore, I ask that you remove references to 'sexual and reproductive health,' and its derivatives from the Global HRP," directed Barsa, "and drop the provision of abortion as an essential component of the U.N.'s priorities to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic."
