ROME ( - Cardinal Carlo Caffarra, co-author of the dubia on Pope Francis' apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia, relates Sr. Lucia's testimony that the devil's final war seeks to destroy marriage and family life.

During an interview on Friday in Rome, Cdl. Caffarra, founding president of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family, recounts a letter he received from the Fatima visionary. Sister Lucia wrote, "Father, a time will come when the decisive battle between the kingdom of Christ and Satan will be over marriage and the family."

The letter from Sr. Lucia was her response to Cdl. Caffarra, who'd written to her in 1984 asking for prayers to overcome the difficulties he was experiencing in operating the pontifical institute established by Pope St. John Paul II in 1981. The cardinal revealed that back then, "The institute was not wanted."

When Sr. Lucia conveyed to him the ominous message from Our Lady of Fatima concerning the spiritual battle that would soon engulf the family, she included a passage full of hope: "And those who will work for the good of the family will experience persecution and tribulation. But do not be afraid, because Our Lady has already crushed his head."

"This remained engraved on my heart and amid all the difficulties we have encountered," said Cdl. Caffarra. "These words have always given me a great strength."

Later that day, Cdl. Caffarra gave a talk in Rome in which he pinpointed two specific attacks on the family stemming from abortion and homosexuality. The family has been under attack since Catholics rejected the encyclical Humanae Vitae, penned by Bd. Pope Paul VI in 1968. At that time Paul VI warned of the consequences that would befall families that use artificial birth control. Divorce, pornography, promiscuity and homosexuality have all been related to the evil of contraception.

Now there's a widening division among prelates on how to address the issue of divorced and civilly remarried couples receiving Holy Communion. This hearkens back to another approved apparition, Our Lady of Akita, who in 1973 predicted, "The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops."
