HASSAKE-NISIBI, Syria ( - In response to the Brussels terrorist attacks, Syrian archbishop Jacques Hindo is saying that innocent people are "reaping what European powers have sown in Syria and Iraq."

In an interview with Agenzia Fides, the head of the Syrian Catholic Archeparchy of Hassake-Nisibi said jihadist groups are able to terrorize Europe because the Western governments have empowered them by favoring oil deals with Saudi Arabian countries.

Speaking of the recent terrorist attack in Brussels and Paris, Abp. Hindo said, "All of this happened because economic logic and billion-dollar contracts with oil bosses prevailed."

Archbishop Hindo also criticized the U.S. Congress for naming ISIS terrorism a genocide, saying the United States is "exploiting the category of genocide for their own interests."

According to His Excellency, the term genocide is being used to cover up the United States' responsibility in supporting armed Islamic groups in the Afghanistan war against the Soviets. He also said the United States is "playing the card of protecting Christians" because they fear the increasing power and influence of Moscow on Middle-Eastern peoples.

His Excellency's remarks echo the words of Syriac Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Joseph III Younan. Patriarch Younan has described the desperate situation of Christians in the Middle East as a result of political agendas from the West.

Patriarch Younan has said that Western democracies have destroyed Syria's infrastructure owing to "foolish politics and a conspiracy under the pretext of bringing democracy."

"The politicians of the West — and in particular those of the United States, Britain and France — are in favor of an endless conflict in Iraq and Syria," His Beatitude has said. It is these Western policies which have "produced groups of terrorists," Patriarch Younan said. "The West has betrayed us."
