Today's Texas primary is the first in the nation for the 2022 midterms. Observers are looking to tonight as a bellwether to gauge the nation's political mood. In tonight's In-Depth Report, Church Militant's Paul Murano looks at what to expect as the midterm primary season kicks off.

Frank Lopez Jr., I-Texas, congressional candidate: "Our congressman in my District 23, in Texas, is a liberal infiltrator — a RINO."

The Lone Star State is speaking tonight with its vote. After Donald Trump's rousing speech at CPAC Saturday, Texas is expected to give some indication of where the GOP stands.

President Donald Trump: "They're going to find out the hard way starting on Nov. 8, and then again even more so on November 2024."

In the past two election cycles, Republicans have been making gains among Hispanics in the Rio Grande Valley and nearby counties.

For U.S. Congress, there are two districts where incumbents are threatened. Republican Van Taylor, in the 3rd Congressional District, is seen as turning RINO.

Rep. Van Taylor, R-Texas, congressional candidate: "I'm very proud of reaching across the aisle — getting things done."

He voted to remove Confederate statues from the Capitol and voted to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy, House minority leader: "Republicans are proud of this country."

Catholic pro-life Congressman Democrat Henry Cuellar is also trying to hold back a strong challenge by far-left Democrat Jessica Cisneros, Cuellar's former intern.

Jessica Cisneros, D-Texas, congressional candidate: "I'm running for Congress because I want to help people."

Cisneros has Squad leader AOC as one of her most strident supporters.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.: "Jessica's our shot. And when we bust that door open, we're going to bring more through."

In statewide contests, Catholic Republican governor Greg Abbott has a big lead over his challengers, one of whom is former congressman from Florida Allen West.

LTC Allen West (Ret.), R-Texas, gubernatorial candidate: "Hey folks, ya know, this gives you a picture of what's going on."

Abbott is looking forward to facing former presidential candidate and fake-Catholic leftist "Beto" O'Rourke in November.

Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas, gubernatorial candidate: "They're focusing on the kind of extremist policies around abortion."

And in another race of consequence, Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton is fighting off primary challenges from Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, the Catholic son of former Florida governor Jeb Bush. Paxton, who championed a failed lawsuit to overturn the 2020 presidential election, is vulnerable following an FBI investigation over alleged corruption.

Donald Trump has endorsed 20 candidates in this Texas primary.

Trump: "Texas is never ever turning blue."

The results will say something about the future of the Republican Party — and Donald Trump's chances of winning a second term in 2024.

The Texas Heartbeat Law remains in effect, protecting unborn babies from death after about six weeks' getstation. Because of that, Democrats think abortion rights will be a winning issue for them this cycle.
