PORT NECHES, Texas (ChurchMilitant.com) - A Southern Texas public school superintendent says Obama's order to allow transgender children to use whatever bathroom they want is "going straight to the shredder."
Doctor Rodney Cavness of the Port Neches-Groves Independent School District is defying any order from the federal government that he maintains violates the safety of students in his district.
Cavness told KFDM, "I'm going to look at the wants and needs and values of 99.9 percent of our parents and kids. Right is right and wrong is wrong, and our President is wrong. I'm going to do what's right."
He continued, "Our community has spoken loudly. I've got 2,500 little girls and young ladies in our school district. I'm going to protect them and the 2,500 boys in our district."
"I'll fight for those kids until I don't have a breath left in my body," he insisted.
He expressed concern for children who suffer from gender dysphoria and noted he's not advocating for them to be bullied or mistreated, and he pilloried liberals for blowing the situation out of proportion. "The Left has made this a big deal. It doesn't have to be a big deal."
Last week Obama issued a mandate through the Department of Justice and the Department of Education directing that public schools allow transgender students to use the bathroom coinciding with their chosen gender identity. It's an attempt to override state laws like North Carolina's that directs students to use the bathroom that coincides with their biological sex.
The Obama administration is threatening to defund already cash-strapped schools for disregarding his order, although the White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, denied it was a threat, instead calling it "guidance."
The administration said,
As a condition of receiving Federal funds, a school agrees that it will not exclude, separate, deny benefits to, or otherwise treat differently on the basis of sex any person in its educational programs or activities unless expressly authorized to do so under Title IX or its implementing regulations. The Departments treat a student's gender identity as the student's sex for purposes of Title IX and its implementing regulations.
That interpretation, however, hasn't been defined by a federal court, and that's what Gov. Pat McCrory of North Carolina is seeking from the federal court. He's suing the Obama administration and asking the court to define the law rather than accept Obama's interpretation.
Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick also rejected Obama's mandate, saying Texas won't be "blackmailed."
Cavness further commented, "This is one of those deals where it's total overreach of the federal government."
