The Blessed Virgin Mary is daughter of God the Father, mother of God the Son and spouse of God the Holy Spirit. In her tri-fold relationship with the triune God, the Blessed Virgin Mary perfectly portrays three forms of authentic love.
Catholics follow her example as daughter of God the Father by being His obedient children. Galatians 4:6 speaks to this relationship: "God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, 'Abba, Father.'" As mother of the Son, she was called Theotokos or God-bearer. Catholics imitate her by bearing within themselves her Son at Holy Communion. As the faithful spouse of the Holy Spirit, she exemplifies that intimate union Catholics are called to have as temples of the Holy Spirit of which 1 Corinthians 6:19 says, "[K]now you not that your members are the temple of the Holy Ghost who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?"
