"No American should be forced to choose between the dictates of the federal government and the tenets of their faith," said President Trump.
President Donald Trump is taking a stand for religious freedom.
On Friday, his administration finalized a regulation defining "gender" as a person's biological sex, changing the 2016 rule in Obama's Affordable Care Act, which defined gender identity as "one's internal sense of gender."
Trump's new rule overturns and supplants the definition by Obama.
Under Obamacare, physicians could be forced to perform transition surgeries as well as abortions, which were also lumped into the mix.
Despite the New York Times accusing President Trump of erasing what it termed as "transgender rights," the measure is actually geared towards protecting faithful from being forced to perform unethical medical procedures — procedures such as abortion, as well as gender transition surgeries — both of which would be mortal sins to perform.
Dr. Grazie Pozo Christie, policy advisor for The Catholic Association, praised the move as a step forward in removing the government from the "business of social engineering, and out of the way of sound medical ethics and patient care."
The move has LGBT groups fuming, arguing explicit protections are necessary for people seeking transition treatment — the claim coming despite University of Birmingham's research finding no scientific evidence of gender reassignment surgery being clinically effective.
The president's move to protect religious freedom is being viewed as a major loss for the Left, and will likely emerge as yet another culture war topic in the coming election.
