NEW YORK (ChurchMilitant.com) - The United Nations (UN) is assigning an independent investigator to monitor aggressive behavior aimed at the LGBT community worldwide. The Human Rights Council made the announcement last Friday following a Thursday vote.
The investigator will be installed this September and will have a three-year tenure. According to the UN website, he will also "carry out country visits, take up individual allegations with Governments and work to support and protect human rights defenders."
Out of the 47 member states, the outcome was 23 affirmative, 18 opposed and six abstaining. Included among countries voting in the affirmative were Western nations like the United States and Mexico. Mexican Ambassador Jorge Lomónaco simply stated, "Remember Orlando. Let us give hope to millions."
China, Russia, Nigeria, Pakistan and other Muslim countries were strongly opposed, calling the movement "divisive" and one that has "no consensus."
The website elaborates that "for the first time, work on this issue will be effectively institutionalized at the Human Rights Council and there will be regular reporting on these issues through the Council and the General Assembly."
The investigator is tasked with creating an informative environment and dialogue with the UN Council so that leaders can "get better on LGBTI issues," according to Randy Berry, a representative of State Departments for Human Rights of LGBTI Persons.
Austin Ruse, president of the Center for Family and Human Rights, worries that the new role is more of a scheme than a solution to a real issue. "This UN-LGBT Enforcer will travel the world imposing the sexual revolution on peoples and churches and countries who do not want it. ... It will be under the guise of protecting LGBT people from discrimination, but that is a lie."
Although protection of all homosexuals and transgender people will be enforced, those who are intersex will be the only exception. Contrary to transgenders, being intersex is the biological abnormality of having the genitalia of both sexes. Such individuals are called hermaphrodites. The UN has specified that these people will not be of interest to the independent investigator.
