The archdiocese of Baltimore recently released the numbers on a survey of the faithful — and they are cause for concern. Only 27 percent of Catholics say they place Jesus at the center of their lives, while 40 percent won't share the Faith for fear of causing offense. Although Abp. William Lori is trying to implement new plans to attract people to the Church, he continues to allow a dissenting, pro-homosexual group to operate freely in his diocese, in spite of his knowledge of their anti-Catholic activities.
The archbishop's willing permission of this kind of dissent can only lead to a loss of faith and declining numbers in the pews, and no amount of planning, strategizing or organizing by diocesan officials is going to lead to an increase in numbers of Catholics as long as the bishop fails to address this problem of leadership. We see this same pattern in multiple dioceses throughout the nation, with bishops doing little more than managing the decline.
