FREDRICKSBURG, Va. (ChurchMilitant.com) - A webinar is blasting a California law forcing pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise state-funded abortions.
Signed into law in 2015, California's Reproductive FACT Act demands pro-life crisis pregnancy centers "advertise state-sponsored abortions," says David French, senior fellow at the National Review Institute. French filed an amicus brief for the Supreme Court case, National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) v. Becerra, arguing that California's First Amendment violation is "more egregious and the implications potentially more far-reaching" than the Masterpiece Cakeshop case, forcing a Christian baker to make a same-sex wedding cake.
The NIFLA is hosting a webinar on Thursday, March 1 with over a dozen pro-life leaders to discuss what Americans can do to stop the law from being used in other states. They are set to explain the reasons why the abortion industry "have launched this unprecedented attack against pro-life pregnancy centers."
The webinar will also discuss how the "unconstitutional new law compels staff and volunteers at pro-life ministries to violate their consciences and promote abortion." French said, "California is making this demand even though it has ample opportunity to advertise state services without forcing pro-life citizens to do so."
"The NIFLA case ... is unquestionably about compelled speech," French argues. He explains that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals "carved out a dangerous First Amendment exception for what it deemed 'professional speech.'" He explained the court ruled that the state had much greater leeway in regulating communication between professionals and clients, such as in the doctor/patient relationship.
He said, "There's nothing uniquely 'professional'" about the state's law to force pro-life centers to advertise the availability of taxpayer-funded abortions. "It's simply the state's speech forced into a private professional setting," French said.
French warns that if the Ninth Circuit's ruling is upheld, "state-mandated 'disclosures'" could be forced upon professionals across the board in religious, cultural or political causes.
French calls this case "one of the most dangerous free-speech cases in a generation." The webinar will also showcase what pro-lifers can do to fight this law and show the "significant and far-reaching ramifications" for the pro-life movement.
Some of the pro-life leaders presenting during Thursday's webinar include: Abby Johnson, the former Planned Parenthood worker who left and founded And Then There Were None; David Bereit, the former CEO of 40 Days for Life; Fr. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, and Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony List.
