Shortly after midnight, Virginia flipped red as Republican Glenn Youngkin beat fake Catholic Terry McAuliffe to become governor-elect of the commonwealth.

Church Militant's Kim Tisor takes a look at what pushed the former business executive over the finish line into a historic victory.

Governor-elect Youngkin: "Alrighty Virginia, we won this thing!"

Youngkin, a first-time candidate, became the first Republican in 12 years to win a statewide office in Virginia.

Initially, the polls favored McAuliffe, but that changed once Youngkin began focusing on what he labeled "kitchen table issues," emphasizing tax cuts, crime and parent-involved education. He also tapped into voters' concerns Biden is leading the United States down the wrong path.

Governor-elect Youngkin: "We will change the trajectory of this commonwealth."

Youngkin made great strides in Virginia's suburbs. For example, Biden carried Loudoun County by 25 points in the general election. McAuliffe won by just over 10 points. The northern Virginia county recently became a hotbed of controversy over woke education in public schools.

No number of Democrat celebs could budge the needle for McAuliffe, who declared during his final debate with Youngkin parents should not tell schools what to teach.

Governor-elect Youngkin: "We're going to embrace our parents, not ignore them. ... Friends, we are going to re-establish excellence in our schools!"

Youngkin's win has Democrats scrambling to redefine their campaign strategies as they look toward next year's pivotal midterm elections.

McAuliffe hired former Clinton attorney Marc Elias ahead of the election, leading many to believe he'd stonewall a Youngkin victory. McAuliffe conceded defeat Wednesday morning. Glenn Youngkin will be sworn in Jan. 15.
