The week-long Take Our Borders Back Convoy is rolling out of Jacksonville, Florida, today enroute to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It's Day Two of the historic event. The convoy, now monikered God's Army, set off from Virginia Beach, Virginia, on Monday to protest the record number of migrants crossing illegally into the United States. It's headed for multiple sites on the U.S. southern border — San Ysidro, a district in San Diego, California; Yuma, Arizona; and Quemado, Texas (Eagle Pass) — for simultaneous rallies on Feb. 3. Read more

A Catholic organization in New England is calling out a local bishop for his public deviation from the Church's immutable teachings on homosexuality. On Sunday, the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts issued a statement slamming an op-ed coauthored by Springfield's Bp. William Byrne and members of Catholics for Inclusion. The Daily Hampshire Gazette published the piece, titled "A message of welcome to the LGBTQ+ community," on Dec. 5. Read more

The U.S. House open-seat count has grown again. A new retirement announcement came on Friday. Democratic Maryland U.S. Rep. Charles 'Dutch' Ruppersberger announced he will not seek a 12th term in the House. He is completing more than 30 consecutive years in elective office, first being elected Baltimore county executive in 1994 and then elected representative of Maryland's 2nd District until his retirement this year. Read more

Lawmakers in the Buckeye State have banned transgender mutilation for minors and helped to ensure a level playing field in female sports. State senators on Wednesday voted 24-8 to override the governor's veto and approved House Bill 68, which outlaws transgender surgeries and hormones for children and adolescents as well as bars athletes from competing as the opposite sex. The bill is also known as the Enact Ohio Saving Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act.  Read more

Priest Sentenced to Jail for ‘Corruption of a Minor’

A Vatican appeals court yesterday convicted a priest of sexually abusing a fellow student while they were both attending a pre-seminary school within the confines of the ecclesiastical city-state. Father Gabriele Martinelli was found guilty of corrupting a minor and sentenced to two and a half years' imprisonment, plus a 1,000 euro ($1,090) fine. An aquittal in 2021 had prompted the appeal. Read more

Former President Donald Trump successfully won the New Hampshire Republican primary last night by about a dozen percentage points, but his performance was not enough to convince former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley to leave the race. In her concession speech, Haley pledged to continue moving forward. Several times, she referenced her home state of South Carolina as a place that could reverse the political tide. Polling, however, suggests that she is not as strong there as she was in New Hampshire. Read more

Víctor Manuel Fernández to be dismissed as prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) and urging instead the appointment of "a competent theologian faithful to the moral teachings of the Church. At one point in the New Hampshire primary, it appeared that Nikki Haley was well positioned against Donald Trump, but a plethora of late polls find the former president expanding his advantage well into double digits. Also on the ballot tonight is the Democratic presidential primary, though without President Joe Biden. He is bypassing this event because the state refused to accept the schedule change recommended by the Democratic National Committee. The new congressional map and the bill changing the state's primary system now go on to Republican Gov. Jeff Landry for his signature.
