Blame Game

NJ Bishops turn on ex-cardinal McCarrick

March 12, 2021  0

Headed by two pro-homosexual prelates, two New Jersey dioceses are countersuing in an attempt to shift blame from themselves to notorious homosexual pederast Theodore McCarrick.

Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark and Bp. James Checchio of Metuchen are local ordinaries in McCarrick's old stomping grounds.

Representing one of McCarrick's victims, attorney Mitchell Garabedian explains both dioceses have filed cross-claims "to deflect blame and not look like enablers of a once-powerful cardinal accused of being a serial pedophile."

Attorney Adam Horowitz, who represents sex abuse victims, speculates on this blame-game strategy.

Horowitz: "It's like a zookeeper and a wild animal, and the wild animal gets out. Do you blame the wild animal or the zookeeper?"

Horowitz does not think juries will buy what these New Jersey dioceses are trying to peddle.

Horowitz: "You can't point the finger at your co-conspirator."

Fr. Paul Sullins: "There's, of course, the problem that we may have bad actors in the hierarchy. We may have a concentration of homosexual men in a homosexual network among senior clerics."

Cardinal Tobin's pro-homosexual record is well-documented, from permitting a so-called "Pride Mass" in the archdiocese to personal scandals.

Tobin: "Bishops need to answer to the Church for a lot of stuff."

Fr. Sullins: One in three men who were ordained in the early 1980s have told us, have reported to us in surveys, that they are homosexual."

Bishop Checchio's pro-homosexual record is likewise well-documented, from — despite outcry — allowing a so-called "LGBTQ Faith Sharing Group" in the diocese, to personal scandals.

Checchio in 2019 refused to meet with Catholics concerned about pro-LGBT Jesuit James Martin speaking in the diocese.

But he was happy to meet with Martin, even inviting him to the rectory where the two had what the Jesuit called "a wonderful discussion."

Both prelates have dubious track records extending far into the past.

Tobin's history goes back to infamous Cdl. Joseph Bernardin, under whom he served as pastor of St. Alphonsus in Chicago's Boystown neighborhood, and Checchio has more connections to McCarrick than he's letting on.

Church Militant will be reporting more on that.
