Contraception From a Catholic Charity

Damning reports about Catholic Relief Services

Catholic Relief Services has again been caught promoting contraception.

Michael Hichborn: "After a year-long investigation, we can prove that Catholic Relief Services is directly involved in the promotion of contraception."

The CRS Rice Bowl initiative is a popular one during Lent — collecting change for those in need as a form of almsgiving.

But a series of reports this month from the Lepanto Institute shed light on how the major nonprofit peddles condoms, in direct contradiction to Catholic teaching.

Lepanto found a number of documents from CRS discussing condom use, sterilization and even abortion.

Now, thousands of Catholics have signed a petition calling for the U.S. bishops to crack down on the organization.

Owing to the Lepanto Institute's reporting, Bp. Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas called for a response from CRS — and potentially an investigation — saying on Twitter, "If what Lepanto says is accurate, then we should call for a thorough investigation of CRS. The confusion must stop. Promoting contraception is immoral, and we are reaping sin's devastation.”

According to Lepanto Institute President Michael Hichborn, this is the first time a U.S. bishop has shown public support for his work.

This is not the first time Catholic Relief Services was caught touting contraception. Back in 2016, Lepanto reported on how CRS funneled money to groups that promote contraception and population control.

As the scandals continue, faithful Catholics wonder how long it will take for the bishops to act.
