Faithful Faulted for COVID

Pushback to New York Times article

July 15, 2020  0

The New York Times is blaming churches for the spread of coronavirus.

A July 8 article highlighted Wuhan virus cases tied to attending church services.

Almost all houses of worship stopped gathering in-person for months, and many are now reopening — but still with strict guidelines.

The Times reported the number of known coronavirus cases linked to people going to church is 650 nationwide.

But out of the 3.2 million cases reported by the Center for Disease Control that's about 0.02%.

For Catholics, every diocese in the country banned public Mass beginning in March. The faithful had almost zero access to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass — relegated to watching the Liturgy remotely online or on television, even for Holy Week and Easter.

Many dioceses have restored public Mass, but not without strict social distancing rules and mask requirements.

Some are criticizing the New York Times for faulting churchgoers and turning a blind eye to the massive left-wing protests and riots.

Senior contributor Holly Scheer wrote for conservative website The Federalist, "Attacking churchgoers right now is both disappointing and shortsighted."

This comes as New York mayor Bill de Blasio is maintaining a ban on public gatherings — except for Black Lives Matter protests.
