Ignoring the Issue

Jesuit university's 'dismaying' report

September 16, 2021  0

A Jesuit university in Washington state has a new report on what it calls the "Catholic sexual abuse crisis." The 44-page report, delivered to the university's president, is supposed to identify formal actions the school should take regarding abuse by clergy. But Church Militant's William Mahoney explores how the report never gets to the heart of the matter.

In April 2019, the president of Gonzaga University in Spokane established the Commission on Gonzaga's Response to the Catholic Sexual Abuse Crisis. The recently released report is the result of that commission, which touts itself in the document, saying, "The commission embarked on a profound journey, one that was deeply challenging and full of meaning."

The report is filled with platitudes and is "unsubstantive" and "dismaying" according to Terence McKiernan, the cofounder of BishopAccountability.org, who added, "Just the spectacle of a group of academics entirely beholden to the person they're advising, for the most part, dancing around the issue."

In fact, the report glosses over its own scandal involving the Cdl. Bea House on campus. In 2018, Fox News reported the house was being used as a retirement community for at least 20 Jesuits accused of sexual misconduct, mostly in Alaska. The Gonzaga commission notes some students and alumni "have felt violated by the decision of the Jesuit province to house abusers in Bea House."

But it provides no details in its section titled "Who Knew What When?" For example, nowhere does the document mention students worked at Bea House and interacted with many of those abusers. Nor does the report mention the Spokane diocese, then under pro-homosexual prelate Blase Cupich, did nothing in 2011 when it learned seven accused priests were living there.

The only Jesuit abuser named in the report is James Poole, whom the report twice admits abused native girls and women, ignoring every other case — most of which involved homosexual predation. The report never even uses the words "homosexual" or "homosexuality."

Instead, the commission recommends the university "develop concrete ways to increase attention to the undergirding features (colonization, sexual violence, masculinity, dominative power systems, trauma) of the Catholic abuse crisis across university curricula."

Without addressing homosexual predation or naming the kingpins of cover-up like pro-homosexual cardinal Blase Cupich, all the university commissions in the world amount to nothing more than academics spinning the wheels of wokeness.

Speaking of wokeness, Gonzaga has a Center for Climate, Society and the Environment, which it says is to "transition from a period of human devastation of the Earth to a period of symbiotic Earth-human relations."
