Slandering St. Serra

Leftist lawmakers rewriting history

September 15, 2021  0

As mainstream media outlets disseminate fake news across America, California's elected officials are taking a step farther — attempting to pass a bill that would falsify history. Church Militant's David Nussman takes a closer look at the Left's latest efforts to slander a Catholic missionary saint.

Leftist rioters vandalized and tore down a statue of missionary-saint Junípero Serra in Sacramento last July. Now, California lawmakers have approved a bill aiming to replace his statue and rewrite history.

Assembly Bill 338 would replace St. Serra with a Native American statue and soil the name of the 18th-century missionary. The bill declares, "Enslavement of both adults and children, mutilation, genocide and assault on women were all part of the mission period initiated and overseen by Fr. Serra."

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco and Abp. José Gómez of Los Angeles are slamming the bill. In an op-ed Sunday, they pointed out that St. Serra "defended indigenous people's humanity" and "decried the abuse of indigenous women."

Two scholars from Santa Clara University likewise blasted the bill, pointing out the proposed legislation's claims in no way resemble factual history. Kathleen Domingo, executive director of California's Catholic Conference, decried the bill, stating, "Credible historians do not support the findings made in this bill, which are highly offensive and not historically accurate."

Last year, across the country, liberals tore down multiple statues of the missionary. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco responded to the attacks by exorcising one of the sites where rioters defaced the saint.

Abp. Salvatore Cordileone: "This sacred site has been desecrated, and so we know there's a presence of evil here."

Not satisfied after toppling St. Serra's monument, incensed leftists are now trying to tear down his legacy and rewrite history.
