Churches Closed, Borders Open

Vatican gives special attention to migrants amid pandemic

June 12, 2020  0

With numerous archdioceses remaining closed or under severe restriction, the Vatican is placing emphasis on the importance of taking in migrants amid the pandemic — again.

On Wednesday, the Holy See's office for migrants and refugees released a statement highlighting how they are now subject to numerous types of injustice and discrimination that threaten their rights, their security and their health.

This isn't the first time the Vatican office pushed a pro-migrant agenda, either.

It's headed by Cdl. Michael Czerny, who in May claimed the Wuhan virus showed that without migrants, many countries cannot go on — immediately after citing the United States' restrictions on entry to the nation during the public health crisis.

President Donald Trump: "I have signed an executive order temporarily suspending immigration into the United States."

The Vatican and pope have consistently promoted the migration message for months, yet remained silent on the question of reopening churches.

In fact, on April 28, the pope urged obedience to mandatory church lockdowns, siding with the Italian State over the nation's bishops, who were pleading with Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to reopen.

Both Pope Francis and Cdl. Czerny have been strong advocates of migrant and refugee rights throughout the pandemic, leaving the faithful wondering if the Holy See will advocate for their right to worship
